Permacaths.

Permacath Insertion.

What is it?

A Permacath is a special catheter used for short-term dialysis treatment. First a tunnel is created under the skin, then the catheter is placed inside a blood vessel in your neck or just under your collarbone and then threaded into the right side of your heart. The catheter can remain in place up to 12 months.

Why would you need it?

A Permacath is intended for those that need routine dialysis. Multiple needle sticks for dialysis can cause trauma to veins and arteries and increase the risk of infection. Once inserted the Permacath provides quick access for dialysis treatment with no added needle sticks.

After the Procedure

Following the procedure, you will be taken to a recovery area where your cardiac status and procedure site will be monitored for 1-2 hours. During this time, you will receive IV fluids to assist in flushing the dye from your system.

Going Home

You will be able to go home the same day of the procedure.

You must refrain from drinking alcohol or smoking for the first 24 hours following the procedure.

Recovery at home can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks. During this time avoid any strenuous activity that requires heavy lifting, straining or vigorous movement.

Be sure to keep your incision covered to avoid infection. Also make sure to wash your hands frequently and avoid unnecessary touching of the incision or the catheter.

It is normal to experience some discomfort and bruising around the site for a few days. You may take an over the counter pain relief medication, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin).

Please contact the doctor right away if you experience any complications such as:

-        Increased redness, pain, swelling, or unusual discharge at the insertion sites

-        Swelling or pain in either arm

-        The catheter gets wet

-        You accidentally kink one or both of the catheters for more than a minute

-        The catheter moves or falls out

-        Irregular heart rhythm

How long does the procedure last?

This procedure usually takes approximately 1 hour, with recovery typically taking between 1 and 2 hours.

Permacath Removal/Exchange

Why would you need it?

The Permacath will be removed once there is no longer a need for intravenous therapy, or it is time to exchange the catheter for a new one.

How long does the test last?

This procedure usually takes approximately 1 hour, with recovery typically taking between 1 and 2 hours.
