AV Fistula Ultrasounds

What is it?

A non-invasive, fast, and repeatable test that allows for early diagnosis of vascular access complications in hemodialysis patients.  The test uses an ultrasound device to view the fistula from multiple angles and to view the flow of blood through the vascular access point.

Why we do it?

This test is commonly used by nephrologists and vascular surgeons to view overall patency of the fistula, as well as early detection of acute dysfunction of the fistula so that the problem may be fixed rapidly and effectively.  It is very important to identify complications as quickly as possible to prevent downtime where the fistula may not be used and/or to prevent potential failure of the fistula.

When is it ordered?

This test is ordered routinely every 3 months to ensure patency of the fistula. It can also be ordered if there is a suspected complication with the fistula.

How should you prepare?

There is no prep for this study.

How long does the test last?

This test usually lasts 45 minutes.
