Fistulogram

What is it?

A fistulogram is a test that utilizes a special dye and X-ray images to evaluate the flow of blood in a dialysis graft or arterio-venous (AV) fistula.

Why would you need it?

A fistulogram is necessary when there is a decrease in blood flow to your dialysis access site, there have been complications when receiving your dialysis treatment or you are having symptoms caused by your dialysis graft or fistula.

After the Procedure

Following the procedure, you will be taken to a recovery area where your cardiac status and procedure site will be monitored for 1-2 hours. During this time, you will receive IV fluids to assist in flushing the dye from your system.

Going Home

You will be able to go home the same day of the procedure, although you will not be able to drive for the first 24 hours after. You will need to arrange in advance for someone to drive you home.

You must refrain from any activity that requires heavy lifting, straining or vigorous arm activity until the puncture site has healed (48 hours) because it may cause bleeding. If bleeding does occur, apply heavy continuous pressure and call 911. You must also refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol for the first 24 hours.

The dressing over the puncture site may be removed 24 hours after the procedure.

Avoid tight clothing and jewelry that may press on your wound.

It is normal to experience some discomfort and discoloration at the puncture site. There may also be a small knot the size of a pea. You may take an over the counter pain relief medication, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin).

If at any point there is redness accompanied with drainage, pain, swelling, fever or chills, or the site is hot to the touch, these may be signs of an infection and must be reported to the doctor IMMEDIATELY. Please notify the doctor if you cannot feel a thrill (pulse) at your fistula site or it feels weak.

How long does the test last?

This procedure usually takes between approximately 1 and 2 hours, with recovery typically taking about 1 hour.
