Sclerotherapy.

What is it?

Sclerotherapy is a procedure done to improve the appearance of varicose and spider veins below the calf. This treatment involves injecting a solution into the affected vein to cause the vein to scar up, forcing blood to be rerouted to through a healthier vein. This treated vein eventually will be reabsorbed by the body and will fade.

Why would you need it?

This procedure can be done for cosmetic purposes, but can also be used to relieve symptoms such as:

  • Swelling

  • Pain

  • Burning

  • Night cramps

After the Procedure

After the procedure you must lie still for 20 minutes to prevent the chemical from leaving the area that is being treated.  After 20 minutes, if there are no complications, we encourage you to walk around to prevent the formation of blood clots.

You will need to wear compression stockings for the first 2 weeks following the procedure. Please refrain from any strenuous activity during this time.

Although you can resume normal activity shortly after the procedure, we advise you to have someone accompany you to drive you home.

Be sure to limit sun exposure as the inflammation caused by the injections in combination with direct sunlight to the treated area may cause sun spots, especially on darker skin tones.

How long does the test last?

This procedure can take 30 minutes to 1 hour.
